Doctor Reacts to Rupaul's Drag Race (Depression, Trauma, EDs and Panic)

This Doctor Reacts video is looking at mental health clips from Rupaul's Drag Race that covers everything from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, EDs, HIV and so much more. I know people can have a love/hate relationship with this show but overall, its been such a force for good in terms of putting queer culture on the main stage and bringing conversations about equality to the front, which in this video focuses on mental health and mental illness in the LGBTQ+ community.
If there's any other scenes or moments you find that you want me to have a look then leave links in the comments or DM me on instagram. Some of these are absolutely brilliant!

The Ru in 1988 clip-she's almost unrecognizable to me both physically and energetically. She was using drugs and alcohol at the time-i think Ru got clean and sober in the mid 90s. I think that might be a big part of what changed for her in the following decade. Thanks for for the acknowledgement of the trauma of the AIDS crisis as well. I tested Poz in 1987 at the age of 23. I am still standing but there are many friends and partners who are long gone 😢

I'd love to hear your take on the reunion episode with the Vixen. There is so much going on there and I think you'd have some really good insight into how it was handled, what was happening, and why it went the way it did?

As someone with disordered eating, it really bothers me that that is still one of the jokes that has persisted throughout the series. I know EDs are extremely common amongst queer individuals and to have jokes like the tictac lunch still be used as staples in the series is really unfortunate.

As a 37 women with chronified ED (beyond other issues), thank you for the shout out on how complex these are. And blurry at times. It definitely presents different in me now compared to when it all started. I have several mental health issues, but my ED really is the one that is most misunderstood, the one I got most shamed for (and feel most shameful about), further traumatized and reduced too. Reduced also by family members, because my underweight is all they see. But even by doctors sometimes. As you said, feels really stigmatizing. Shared experiences with other patients can be so powerful. This send shivers down my spine. It really is hard.

I have had people declare me all better because I did everything I was asked to, as someone with autism the structure and routine of the day can be all that there is, thats why I went to work right after a suicide attempt. sometimes I think I should just misbehave in order to be taken seriously

this really resonates with me !!! i would purposely act out in my first year of college because no one was taking me seriously as it was the only way i would get the attention that i actually needed. eventually i did find the most amazing teacher who actually treated me how i deserved to be, but it honestly is such a difficult thing being someone who doesnt 'look' like they need help. sending lots of love <3

I'm glad they addressed the connection between Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and depression. I was diagnosed with EDS 7 years ago. My body is slowly breaking down due to faulty connective tissue and I've lost the ability to do a lot of things I used to enjoy. I remember the day that I realized I can no longer wear high heels. I'm still grieving that loss. So I truly appreciate hearing that someone else has experienced the same and is willing to share it with the world.

I had multiple EDs over a long time because I was horribly insecure, especially because I had a thyroid condition. I wasn't even that big, I just had hips wider than my sister, so I wasn't a size 0. But I had violin hips, so my extremely obese mother would jab at me and call me fat all the time. Over a decade of EDs wrecked my metabolism, and I became disabled soon after recovering (unrelated). So I am unable to exercise at all, basically. On top of that disability (and mental health), I have the hypermobile joints that was in the video, but not the disorder. If I lay on my side my hip can dislocate. Once I mentioned an eating disorder to someone I didn't really know more recently, and they said "I can tell," just assuming it is binge eating because now I can't keep weight off from all the years I was anorexic, bulimic, abusive meds to lose weight, making sure I burned exactly how many calories I ate at the gym or more, ect. It hit me like a ton of bricks. It came up because I felt backed into a corner about something else and I wanted to shift attention away. I can't look in a mirror, haven't been able to for years. I don't let doctors weigh me. I don't own more than a kitchen scale. I know what is and isn't healthy, so I don't read calories. I don't go on anything in the gym or have any apps that measure burned calories. It is so, so, so hard to not backslide, especially now that I'm disabled. And people who judge me stop as soon as they spend time with me and realize how little I actually eat. Which isn't me dieting, I just don't eat as much as I look like I do. Not even close.

Thanks for the CBT Ru... According to the NHS I've had an "urgent need" for it since 2009 - still waiting! I actually went down a negative road because of the false hope and empty promises of help from others to the point of snapping and thinking screw you to the NHS, my GP and the lack of support services out there. I'm now totally isolated but not asking for help means I can accept it is definitely not coming and yes I'm still screwed up but It's on me. I have no friends or family or any support and accept dying alone - messed up? Yes, but I'd rather that than be mentally screwed over or drugged up on more than double the recommended dose of happy pills and take a pharmacy of pills to deal with the side effects.

8:36 If only The Doctor (Gatwa) had known that all he had to do was make the Maestro go to sleep, he could have beaten them so much easier. (Jinkx plays the God of Music "the Maestro" on Doctor Who now for those who don't get the joke).

The sad thing is that on Canada’s drag race the judges were SO harsh to were one of the queens had an anxiety attack on stage. Rupaul wasnt a judge but why would u hire those people? Or even keep them on the show after what they did. They are way too harsh for one and for two they always pick the worst outfits to win. Even the queens are like “really? My outfit…?” They are so fake and everything its terrible.

  • @burner2047

the bit at the end is RuPaul being fabulous and talking true. Tell the man with the money to come over here and pay me. Nothing wrong with that. I think the number one thing for young queer people to grow up healthy is to have queer adults in their lives as role models. Not on tv or the internet, flesh and bone IRL. I was so lucky to have successful queer people in my life such that there was nothing anyone could say that could make me believe queer was anything but wonderful, (and I spent my adolescence in the 80s).

How we are feeling always will show on the outside. A huge issue is that oftentimes when we go for the first time to a doctor - we meet them then and there, so they can't compare us with our "usual self". I will say tho, that after 2 years of dealing with incapacitating chronic pain amongst a dozen other symptoms ranging from paresthesia, GI issues to double vision, it was finally a psychiatrist (after the rheumatologist decided it must be psychosomatic) who was the first person to say "Look, I can't really discard that there is something physical going on, but it's been two years we need to try something to help you out. I will never be able to thank that man enough.

just so you’re aware, the one where ru is wearing the green dress is a clip of her from season 2 of drag race when James (formerly known as tyra) won, and the queen having a panic attack in the clip was juice boxx from canadas drag race season 2. i don’t really understand why the creator of the clip mashed the two together LMAO

It's Always Sunny is one of the most hilarious shows I've ever seen but they still manage to at least touch on serious subjects but still ultimately, not solve any of their issues and learn nothing or learn very little, if anything constructive/positive 🤣🤣 Also, Doctor Elliott, I was wondering what your thoughts are on people who do not ever have any dreams. The general consensus is/was that there was maybe a correlation between those who do not dream and it leading or being a symptom of becoming/being a serial killer or some sort of other drastic negative behavior. 🤔

She is suffering more from abandonment than anything else. I think from the beginning she had been portrayed as having some mental issues but they are largely kept in check by the people around her but it gets worse once the strong people from her life disappears.

That episode of bojack was the worst episode of the series. Not because it was bad but because it summed up how awful bojack really is. Made me hate him from then on. He went from whiney victim to an overtly evil narcissist

I could be wrong, but I guess I don't need to humanize anyone. I already understand that they had or have a life, a mother and a father. They also have an individualness, if that's a word. My ex, someone I believe to be a psychopath, she said to me that someone told her how to empathize with an ambulance being behind you and why you should pull over to let them go. She said, to imagine them being your family. I thought that was a good idea for a long time, but after we broke up and I started thinking about her behavior and how she treated me and others around her, I started to wonder why anyone would need to put that into such a perspective? I would never need to imagine that. I understood that she would need convincing like that to be able to slow down and pull over letting an ambulance to pass her. Thankfully she never learned how to drive. Not an intent of disrespect towards her, just my thoughts.

  • @LanceLust1980HugeTheWarningFan

I read on Quora someone mentioned that they thought Dahmer might have had BPD (borderline personality disorder) due to his abondonment issues. Now, having confessed because the gig was up might also be that in the confession he'll be looked at and will probably never have to be as alone as he felt whilst committing the crimes. He might have felt a sense of gain rather than loss, which is what he said he was feeling his whole life. With his mother ODing, and his father not seeming to give a bleep. He wanted stability and his mind warped the definition. So being arrested and having to be around so many people might have given him that feeling he had never had before. Inclusion.
